Otafuku: taste of Tokyo in New York

A little taste of Tokyo in New York! In the East Village where a small group of excellent Japanese (non-sushi division) restaurants are nestled near Texas BBQs and the "Curry Row", you can find Otafuku - where you'd swear you've been transported smack in the middle of Shinjuku.

One of the things we love about New York is that contrary to popular belief, there are a lot of great bargains to be had in the city, from discounted clothings and electronics to tasty and cheap eats. From our list of favorites, Otafuku ranks right up there. The hole-in-the-wall (except for the traditional red flags and lanterns that makes it a bit difficult to miss) specializes in a authentic items that are direct imports of popular street dishes in Japan. First there’s okonomiyaki, which is a stuffed Japanese-style pancake with thick, sweet soy sauce, and the absolutely my-god-I-must-have-another takoyaki, which are little fritters doused with mayonnaise and bits of squid flakes (tastes better than it sounds!) Read more about it in the New York Magazine’s review and Yelp!’s review. Just out of curiosity, here’s also a YouTube video of actual street foods of Tokyo:
