Remembering Shelby Foote

One of the most moving television experience I've had was watching The Civil War back in more than 17 years ago. His down-to-earth yet scholarly storytelling immediately made me a fan, and brought the story to life.

Shelby Foote was born in November 17, it was interesting to find out that he was a “relative unknown” according to Wikipedia. No matter what circle of influence he had before the series, he certainly made a big impact on me. Of course there were other illuminaries that were featured on the series, some more engaging than others, but Foote’s wonderful southern drawl and the particularly descriptive narratives were vivid enough to bring the characters alive. Foote passed away on June 27, 2005.

Ken Burn's getting more deserved attention for his new series The War, but many have missed his other masterpiece Jazz. Get it for your iTunes, or from Amazon. I say it makes a super X-mas (already!) present as well.
