Critical Mob launches

Critical Mob, one of our latest projects is now launched as a beta. Featuring an terrific array of related music, books, movie, TV, and cultural profiles and review (about both the artists and their respective works), it was one of the most sophisticated ExpressionEngine builds we’ve ever done.
Some of the challenges we faced were to create an interface that’ll make data entry as easy as possible, as there were quite a large and dense volume of entries and related data. Just as importantly, we wanted to install a very granular set of toggles to control exactly where and how a certain piece of information appears on the site. In the end, Critical Mob pushed ExpressionEngine close to its limits, but we were able to bring a highly complex data structure into EE’s framework and successfully launch the beta site, now open at www.criticalmob.com.

EE 2.0 To be Released

If you’ve been following the 2.0 news for a while, you know that there has been speculation that it’ll be out of its much anticipated development labs before the year. It’s now confirmed. EE 2.0 will be released on December 1st of this year. We’ve been evaluating the beta version for several weeks, and am counting the days until the official release.
For more information, head over to EE's official blog for a list of related links and tips. If you're interested in the price structure of the new release, Leslie Camacho (the President of EllisLab) has this to say:

ExpressionEngine 2.0 will be released on December 1st, 2009. The Commercial license will retail for $299.95, the Non-commercial license for $149.95, and there is a new license type called Freelancer. We’ll have more info on Freelancer in November but the basic idea is that its an easy way for a freelancer (or small team) to deploy EE 2.0 on their own website for $99.95 (please note that the Freelancer is not the Commercial license, just cheaper). If you purchased EE 1.6.3 or later, the upgrade price to 2.0 is only $50 (the retail price difference). That’s a year and half (plus) of grace period on upgrades.

We'll keep you up to date, and counting the days until December 1st!

Google Wave

What is a Wave? According to Google, it is “equal parts conversation and document,” “shared,” and “live.” More directly, it’s “an online tool for real-time communication and collaboration.” After looking at its introductory video, I say Wave is the most exciting launch since Google Analytics (sorry Google Voice). For anyone working with multiple partners and clients, it may also change the way we work - and for the better.

Alternate solutions to Google Analytics

We all love Google Analytics. But for those of us who would like to try some worthy alternates (whether to get a second set of data, or looking for additional features), there are a couple of great suggestions: Mint and Woopra. We have used both to accompany our Google Analytics setup, and have gained more insight to our traffic.
Although they both are analytics solutions, they work in a different way. Woopra features live tracking and real time analysis, while Mint has a great user interface and set of plug-ins and add-ons called “pepper.” Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a blogger, the extra layer of information would be worth your investment ($30 for Mint, and free for Woopra.)

Our new homepage update

It is something we’ve been working on (and off) for a while, but we’re excited to get it live. The key feature is the new slider panel, which introduces us, highlights our strengths and differences. We’ve streamlined the overall look by presenting a fewer number of items as well. In the upcoming weeks we’re planning to make the site more resourceful and content-driven.
The idea came from the fact that we don’t get a chance to speak with our potential clients as much as we’d like. Although nothing can replace a great in-person meeting, hopefully the new design and content gets a step closer to that experience. If you like what we’ve done, or have a suggestion for improvement, leave us a comment. We’d love to hear from you.

Live streaming for Facebook and Twitter

Thanks to our friend and client Tom Masiero at YoParts, I was introduced to Livestream’s customized live interactive event services that fully integrates with Facebook and Twitter. If you’re looking to broadcast live events on Facebook and Twitter, its’ a game-changer. » see more
What’s nice about this service that it’s a seamless experience from beginning to end. For us designers, it gives us a chance to fully customize the branding and viewing experience of each event. For the event organizer, it’s one of the few packages available today that makes livestreaming both easy, and scalable.

Livestreaming on the internet always has been a shaky proposition, but with services like this becoming more and more mainstream (pun intended!) and affordable, I can see a near future where it’ll really impact how small businesses can create an event that can be shown to thousands if not tens of thousands to potential customers.

While the $3,000 fee may be out of reach for a single small business owner, the cost can be defrayed by sharing among many businesses or sponsors participating in a single event. Along with the oh-so-very-cool livestreaming “http://www.livestream.com/blog/?p=2447,” the idea of broadcasting high quality video on-location is becoming more and more an affordable reality, especially compared to the early days of choppy-video live internet feeds that cost tens of thousands of dollars.
