5by5’s The Mixdown

As part Creat-ee.com, we've been preparing a series of videocasts. We came across 5by5.com's "The Mixdown" during our preparation, and found it to be a great resource.
What makes the series a must is the easy approach to subjects, and “I’ve been there too” (lack) of attitude of both Dan and the terrific co-host Anthony Stauffer. If you’re interested in anything related to producing audio or videocasts for your site, subscribe to the feed here, and also don’t forget to catch their live streaming every Friday 2pm.

Big changes coming to Downtown NY

Our office has been located in Downtown location (Financial District, or FiDi) for the past 4 years now, and we've seen a lot of changes. Now the neighborhood is about to change more dramatically, with the proposed plan to revitalize the area. Take a look at the entire plan at DowntownNY.com: http://bit.ly/9m2A8t.
Of course there was the boom in the financial sector (we’re smack between the former AIG building and Wall St.), but the real changes can be seen during the evening, when there are more people and activities than I’ve ever seen. Restaurants and shops are opening (and closing), there are actually people working around past 7pm, and a sure sign of a growing area (at least in NY standards), a 500% increase in street food carts just around our building.

NY Magazine also called FiDi (as the Financial District is sometimes known as) hottest place to work and live in the next few years, and I do see a lot of potential in the area still. Now it can’t compete with Chelsea, Villages, and some other areas in terms of choice in food, shops, and event venues, but remembering what it was like even before 9/11 (a virtual ghost town after the Wall St. guys are whisked away in their Lincoln town cars), this is quite a change.

HTML 5: Ready for prime time (except…)

HTML5 is (mostly) here, and it promises to be a great leap ahead. Gone are the array of plug-ins and downloads just to play multi-media files. Also cutting down time are new classes, API, and support for everything from background “canvas” to native drag-and-drop features. So what’s the worry?
Unfortunately IE8 still only supports 26% of the bag of goodies HTML5 lays out for us, and that’s disappointing. Hopefully that’ll change very soon, and in the meanwhile click here for the full-size download of this great poster explaining the benefits and which browser supports which features.

It’s about time to give a shout-out to Brandon Kelly’s (new) company Pixel & Tonic. He just released Playa, Matrix, and Wygwam add-ons for ExpressionEngine 2.0 beta, and believe us we’ve been holding our collective horses for these essential tools. He’ll be speaking at the upcoming EECI 2010 as well, coming up May 24th in San Francisco.

Critical Mob launches

Critical Mob, one of our latest projects is now live. Featuring an terrific array of related music, books, movie, TV, and cultural profiles and review (about both the artists and their respective works), it was one of the most sophisticated ExpressionEngine builds we’ve ever done (designed by the talented group over at Sweden Unlimited).
Some of the challenges we faced were to create an interface that’ll make data entry as easy as possible, as there were quite a large and dense volume of entries and related data. Just as importantly, we wanted to install a very granular set of toggles to control exactly where and how a certain piece of information appears on the site. In the end, Critical Mob pushed ExpressionEngine close to its limits, but we were able to bring a highly complex data structure into EE’s framework and successfully launch the beta site, now open at www.criticalmob.com.
